sleeping in paradise
Mauritius is like the galaxy, dotted with five, six and seven stars hotels and resorts. Since these private gardens of Eden provide their guests with virtually everything you can think of and then some, there is no reason to discover the rest of the exciting universe called Mauritius. And that is a shame, since the island has a lot to offer in the culture, cuisine, nature and history departments.
One way to discover paradise is taking public transport a.k.a. the bus. For instance the one crowded with uniformed school kids headed to Grande Riviere Noire. Once the bus has left, taking the 30 or so staring and giggling faces with it, you’ll find yourself looking at a lush garden exploding with colors and the inviting smell of blossoming bougainvillea.
The garden leads you to the ocean, but before you take a refreshing dive, you’ll meet the owners of this Bed & Breakfast nirvana named Les Lataniers Bleus. They will show you around the property, hopefully bringing you to the room you reserved at the pool and offer you some home distilled liquor after a tasteful, outside dinner.
The next couple of days are filled with swimming with dolphins, wining and dining, books, sunsets and hiking in the wild Black River Gorge. At some point the bus arrives once again to pick you up and drop you off at another star in the firmament called Mauritius.
