happy landing – hotel verde cape town international airport

P1000014The core of the air conditioning serves as a cooler for the wine supply. The fish produce nutrition for veggies for the kitchen. The artwork is a translation of the imagination of local school kids by professional South African artists. The pool is a self-supporting eco-system. Rainwater is re-used and solar panels provide both shade and power. A roof garden cools the reception area and wind-turbines generate kilowatts. Ninety percent of all waste is recycled and the venue is 70% energy efficient. Oh….the rooms are luxurious, quiet, clean and comfy with views over a small wetland park and….the airport.

HOTEL VERDE_STANDARD OPEN_GREENWhat is this place? It is Africa’s number 1 green hotel. Where is this place? Next to Cape Town International Airport. Why would I stay in such a place? Because plunging into the eco-pool, sleeping in a comfortable bed, being welcomed by the warm and friendly staff and enjoying one of the best hotel breakfasts ever all within an hour of touching down is truly a happy landing.

HOTEL VERDE_LOUNGE & BARHotel Verde opened its doors in August 2013. The aim of the owners was to create a hotel that would be one of the most sustainable of its kind in the world while at the same time embrace tourists, business people and congresses with quality and kindness. Recognition of the realization of these goals came quickly with the numerous rewards the hotel received since the opening less than two years back and Hotel Verde is now the proud holder of the title Africa’s Greenest Hotel.

thumb_P1000013_1024Working with as many local suppliers as possible the hotel is also keen to welcome its guests with the best the Cape region has to offer in terms of food as well as art. Neither the decoration of the public spaces and rooms nor the dinner and breakfast the kitchen cooks up are of the ‘13 in a dozen’ kind you see at most of the world’s airport hotels. At Hotel Verde the art has a personal (and local) touch and is breakfast on its way to claim a position in the top-10 of ‘Best Hotel Breakfasts Worldwide’.

Arriving late in the evening or catching a plane early morning at Cape Town International has become kind of fun since Hotel Verde opened its doors. Thanks to this green hotel, the world as well as intercontinental travelling has become a bit more sustainable.
