the biggest little bar
The Biggest Little City in the World has marketed itself brilliantly. But five years into the financial crisis, brilliance has become a distant memory. The gold fever that once rushed the streets of this Nevada town has broken and so has the spell of gambling that followed in its footsteps. Quiet streets and boarded up casino’s make look as if the Wild West has left Reno on a Mustang.
But fortunately looks can be deceiving. Cause on the south side of the Truckee River, Reno’s poker face is slowly breaking into a smile. A bright smile with galleries, breweries, bars and restaurants showing their shining teeth.
One of these ‘turnaround’ places is Craft Wine & Beer. This bottle shop has undressed an old costume store, gave it a make-over and turned it into a bustling place where bottles of wine, beer, spirits, sake and soda are waiting to quench your thirst.
Apart from the location, the previous life of the building, interior and staff, Craft is special because of their self service concept. For beers, you walk into a huge refrigerator, making your pick from a couple of hundred bottles, that mostly come from small farmers or brewers. You show your beer to the bartender, who puts it on your tab and gives you a glass. Wine, whiskey, sake or cognac are kept on wooden blocks in the middle of the place. In case you like what you taste, you can buy a box or bottle and take it home with you when you leave.
All in all Craft is a great hangout when in Reno as well as a perfect stop on your way to have a bite and a beer at brasserie and brewery Saint James around the corner.
