portland style

lion and the rose bed and breakfast portland @ journeylism.nlIs it the coffee culture that gave the ‘Portlanders’ the idea? Or perhaps the world record density of beer breweries per capita? Or else the fact that the Oregon city is surrounded by wineries? Whatever it is, a place that chooses ‘Keep Portland Weird’ as the city motto must have a vibe. A good vibe of course. One, that mixed with charm and hospitality defines the Lion and Rose Victorian B&B.

Whom of the two owners running the show at the B&B is the Lion and whom the Rose, is a question to be answered next time around. For now, all that matters is their warm hospitality and the looks and feel of the 1906 monument.

Tower room

The Victorian house was built by Gustav Freiwald, owner of the Star Brewery (brewer of Hop Gold Export and Rose City Special Beer). But that was then, and this is now: a B&B that is on the National Register of Historic Places list and transports you to another time.

Lion and Rose features 8 guest rooms, starting at $125 for double occupancy including breakfast, all decorated by the magic wand of Queen Victoria. Each room is unique, but as in life, some are even ‘uniquer’. So when possible, stay in a tower room. Here you feel like the king or queen of the block, reining over Irvington Historic District’s street life while sipping some Portland coffee, wine or beer.

After a good nights sleep and a hearty breakfast in the carefully decorated dining room Portland is waiting. Waiting to be ‘kept weird’.
