Between these Dutch mountains, about 6 kilometers from the beautiful state capital Maastricht, you’ll find the hamlet of Vilt. With a population of less than a 1000 souls, Vilt is one of those blink-with-your-eyes-and-you-have-both-arrived-and-left-it kind of villages. With your eyes open though, it is a pristine place within walking distance of Holland’s most well-known spa, Thermae 2000.
Vilt is also the home of bed and breakfast ‘De Lochterhof’. Built in 1800, the blue-purple marl building owned by Annelies and Johan Penders is situated amidst a beautiful garden, vineyards and fields. The old haymow (hooischuur in Dutch), has been transformed into a lovely quest quarter by Annelies and Johan. So lovely in fact, that ‘De Lochterhof’ has won the Dutch Bed and Breakfast of the year award in 2013.
The moment you arrive at ‘De Lochterhof’, you feel you start to unwind. After you have parked your car under the roof of the old shed, and entered the tastefully decorated haymow apartment, you sit down for a minute or two on the old chesterfield couch and let the classical music Johan has turned on for you intermingle with your new, relaxed state of mind.
After you have settled in at the two story, detached B&B, you either get out and sit in the lush garden or head for Maastricht, a hike along the river ‘de Geul’ or a visit to nearby Chateau St. Gerlach. Depending on the season of your visit, the car will stay put when you are enjoying ‘De Lochterhof’. A bike, shoes or public transport are all you need.
Mornings at ‘De Lochterhof’ are celebrated with an excellent breakfast composed of local products served in the light breakfast room at the main house or on your own porch. During the evenings, time flies sitting outside near the pond or gazing at the stars through the glass of the small conservatory.
