It is almost 12 at night when Agnès, the owner of our historic design loft texts to check if we arrived safely and are on our way to her place. It is a personal touch we get to encounter a lot more during our stay in France’s second largest city: Marseille.

Where the city, like so many ports around the world, seems to be a bit rough at first, it is people like Agnès who give it the warmth of the Mediterranee. Tips, tricks, places to eat, to drink, to enjoy music, architecture, art, fashion; this and more is all presented like small gifts by our landlord-for-a-weekend. A weekend partly spend on the rooftop balcony of 61 Rue Sénac de Meilhan. A tastefully decorated place with a mix of Swedish design and vintage furniture in the middle of a hip, upcoming neighborhood and within walking distance of the old harbor, old town and central station.

Marseillais like Agnès are what make Marseille a worthwhile destination for a city trip. Marseille’s inhabitants are warm and friendly, a colorful melting pot of all the good things our world has to offer. Thanks to its international orientation as a centuries (millennia) old shipping port, massive immigration and a great effort by the French government, Marseille is a fine choice for all who love culture, food, fashion, urban adventure and, thanks to a mini archipelago right in front of the city, even nature.
