a taste of tarrawarra

Imagine, staring in the bony face off a blue skull two hours after touching down at Melbourne’s Tullamarine Airport. Then fantasize about ordering cannelloni of wild rabbit braised in white wine while watching the green hills of Yarra Valley contrasting sharply with the blue Victorian sky. Is this an illusion? No, it is a dream come true and is called TarraWarra.

TarraWarra is both a wine estate and a museum. The winery being on its way to middle age (30, est. 1983), the museum still a kid (10, est. 2003). The two share the same address and are connected by the lines of modern architecture, drawn carefully on the green canvas of Yarra Valley, just 50 miles east of Melbourne.

tarrawarra wine and art estate yarra valley australia @ journeylism.nlThe TarraWarra Estate was established in 1983 when the Besen family planted the first 10 acres of vines along with a vision. A vision to grow the best grapes, handpick them and age them into wines of superb quality. Thirty years and a wine drenched lunch later, the conclusion is that they succeeded. Not only serves the estate a bouquet of beautiful wines like Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, it also offers a menu that matches its produce perfectly. The previously mentioned cannelloni of wild rabbit and freshly shucked oysters with Yarra Valley salmon roe & verjus jelly for starters, followed by herb crusted rack of Yeringberg lamb with confit shoulder, flageolet beans & piquillo peppers or roasted salmon with salsa verde & a stew of leek, kipfler potato & prunes. For desert the menu offers choices like tarrawarra estate wine sorbets, a farmhouse cheese selection or a wine & cheese match; mauri gorgonzola with a tasting glass of 2010 k-block merlot……..

Next to all these sensations, you’ll find another treat that triggers your senses: The TarraWarra Museum of Art (TWMA). The museum was also founded by Eva and Marc Besen. They called it a gift to the Australian public. A place where you can unwrap presents from the private art collection of the Besens or be inspired by the changing exhibitions of contemporary and modern art.
